High School for Public Service: 10 Writing Tips - an Editorial Checklist

1. Every written assignment should have a heading that includes the following:
  • your name, date, block/class, and assignment title
2. Use and indent paragraphs whenever you introduce a new idea or claim.

3. When referring to the title of a text, make sure it is
  • properly capitalized AND italicized or underlined if it is a long form work OR in “quotation marks” if it is a short form work.

4.  Always capitalize the word “I”, all proper nouns, and the first word of each sentence.

5. Be professional with your spelling - remember that spell check does not equal     proofreading and that words should be written out (no abbreviations or text speak).
  • Double-check your homophones so that the word you’ve used is the word you mean!

6. Be consistent with verb tense.

7.
Check for subject-verb agreement.

8. Use
apostrophes to show possession and omission.

9. Review comma usage.
  • Remember that commas alone cannot connect two sentences, but that they are always needed to mark off different parts of a complex sentence so that your meaning is clear.
10. Text from other sources needs to be in quotation marks and properly cited.

** All printed work should be 12 Point, Times New Roman type, double spaced.**
