Homework: Figurative Language Lessons

Come prepared to class tomorrow with an example of your literary device from Haroun and the Sea of Stories. Everyone should bring in their own example and explanation so that you can put it all together in class tomorrow.

TASK → Design a simple 5 minute LESSON PLAN to teach your classmates about a specific literary device and give them practice identifying and analyzing use of that device; Haroun and the Sea of Stories is your model text.

LESSON PLAN must include:
  1. Mini-lesson with examples
  2. Discussion and/or a quick activity that lets your “class” practice working with the examples and allows YOU to check whether they understand what your literary device is and how it is used.

To prepare your lesson plan, you must as a group:
  • Draft a clear definition of the literary device (in your own words!)
  • Identify 3 - 4 good examples (at least one per person in your group) from the text (page numbers!)
  • For each example, brainstorm HOW that device is being used (in other words, what does it add to the text?) - this is so you will be prepared to lead your classmates in a discussion about the examples you have identified.
  • Compose at least 2-3 questions that you will use to check the class understanding of what you have taught.
